Fire safety advice shaped by enforcement experience
I’m James Milton, founder and lead fire risk assessor at Blue Fire Safety. I bring more than 25 years of London Fire Brigade experience, including a background in fire safety inspection and enforcement.
That experience has given me a practical understanding of how fire precautions perform in real buildings, how weaknesses develop and what enforcement teams expect from those responsible for fire safety.
Today, I help landlords, freeholders, managing agents, property managers and business owners understand the risks within their buildings and decide what action needs to be taken.

Experience from both sides of fire safety
Working in inspection and enforcement showed me that effective fire safety starts with understanding the building itself. Its use, layout, occupants and management arrangements all influence the level of risk and the precautions required.
It also taught me that a report is only valuable when the person receiving it can understand and use it. Long lists of technical observations provide little reassurance if they do not explain which findings matter most or what should happen next.
I established Blue Fire Safety to provide clear, building-specific assessments backed by real enforcement experience. My role is to examine the available precautions, identify meaningful shortcomings and explain the recommended actions in a logical order.
I work with residential and commercial properties across London, Surrey, Sussex, Kent, Hertfordshire and Berkshire. These include blocks of flats, HMOs, care and supported-living settings, hotels, offices, shops, warehouses, factories and mixed-use buildings.
“Good fire safety advice should explain the risk, why it matters and what needs to happen next.”
A focused, independent service
Blue Fire Safety concentrates on assessment, inspection and practical reporting. This focused approach allows me to remain current within my areas of expertise and provide advice that is proportionate to the building and its occupants.
Fire risk assessments consider potential ignition sources, people who may be especially vulnerable, means of escape, fire detection and warning systems, emergency lighting, signage, fire doors and evacuation arrangements. The precise scope is adapted to the type, use and occupancy of each property.
Fire door surveys examine visible features that may affect a door’s ability to resist fire and smoke. This can include the door leaf, frame, gaps, seals, hinges, closer, glazing and relevant signage. Findings are clearly recorded, with recommendations provided where defects or concerns are identified.
Where a building requires specialist fire-engineering input, I will explain why and outline the appropriate next step. This ensures you seek the right level of expertise for the issue involved.
We don’t offer fire engineering, and we don’t carry out the remedial work we recommend. Assessment and survey work only, so there’s never a reason to find a problem that isn’t there.
Your enquiry is reviewed directly by James, not a call centre.
How I approach each assessment
Every building presents a different combination of people, layout, construction and management arrangements. My approach reflects those differences.
Start with the building
The assessment is based on how the premises are used and managed in practice, rather than relying solely on existing paperwork.
Concentrate on meaningful risk
Findings are considered in context so that minor observations do not distract from issues requiring prompt attention.
Explain recommendations clearly
Reports use straightforward language and provide practical, prioritised actions that property and site managers can follow.
Maintain professional standards
My work is informed by continuing professional development and the professional expectations associated with IFSM membership.
Questions about James and Blue Fire Safety
What experience does James bring?
James has more than 25 years of London Fire Brigade experience, with a professional background that includes fire safety inspection and enforcement. This provides valuable insight into how buildings are assessed and what enforcement officers expect duty holders to demonstrate.
Which types of property can Blue Fire Safety assess?
Blue Fire Safety supports both residential and commercial properties. This includes blocks of flats, apartment buildings, HMOs, supported accommodation, hotels, care settings, offices, shops, warehouses, factories and mixed-use premises.
What will the report tell me?
Your report will identify relevant hazards and shortcomings, explain their significance and set out prioritised recommendations. The aim is to give you a practical document that can guide improvements and support ongoing fire safety management.
Is a fire door survey the same as a fire risk assessment?
No. A fire door survey examines the condition and visible features of the doors included within its scope. A fire risk assessment considers the broader fire safety arrangements throughout the premises. A door survey can support the wider assessment, but it does not replace it.
Does Blue Fire Safety provide fire engineering?
Blue Fire Safety provides assessment, survey and advisory services. If the circumstances require chartered fire-engineering expertise, James will explain the type of specialist input that should be sought.
